The Boy Who Kicked Pigs
by Tom Baker and Adapted by Kill the Beast

About the Play

13-year-old Robert Caligari is a nasty piece of work. But today is the day he gets his comeuppance. Today is the day he’s going to die.

When Robert kicks his sister’s beloved piggy bank Trevor out of the window, he sets in motion a chain of events that results in the unexpected demise of a local fishmonger.

Having developed a taste for blood and sick to death of sneering, imbecilic adults, Robert sets about becoming the real murderer he has always dreamed of being, all the while egged on by the newly-talking Trevor.

Based on the book by Doctor Who’s Tom Baker, this madly-hilarious, frenetic scream of a show, which includes shark-mauling beach-goers, burning vicars and even waltzing rats, is a multi-roling masterpiece that tells the gloriously grisly tale of one scoundrel’s attempt at infamy.

Packed full of the verbal and visual ingenuity that Bruiser is known for, this “horrible little show about a horrible little murderer” is jam packed with physical comedy, inventive staging and ensemble playing, in Bruiser’s trademark style.

It is gothic, horror, absurdist, fairytale Grimm, edgy, Roald Dahl type stuff. Dreadful things happen to dreadful people. Ultimately it is a story about a lonely boy who's driven to terrible acts of violence by a talking piggy bank, mixing the truly dark and the utterly ridiculous. Everyone's horrible and everyone gets their comeuppance. But we are left wondering whether, if Robert had someone else to talk to - a single real person to listen to him when he felt unheard and ignored - all the characters could have had much happier endings. It would be less fun though.

reviews

“Bruiser Theatre Company has once again proven why they’re one of Northern Ireland’s most vibrant arts outfits.” GNI Mag
“It’s a delightfully dark premise into which Bruiser inject their physical comedy with rhyming dialogue, tight choreographed routines and slow-motion falls, character and costume changes quicker than an actor can turn on their heels, and madcap tomfoolery.” Alan in Belfast
"The tight choreography of the ensemble is so smooth it belies the sheer skill, practice, and timing behind it. This is a masterclass in physical storytelling: chaotic, playful, and always visually engaging." No More Workhorse
"May is once again challenging the boundaries of traditional theatre and clearly relishing in doing so - and we, too, relish what we see, in the same way the talented cast and crew visibly relish in what they do." Simon Fallaha
"It’s all something of a sweet-sour rush—in playing and impact—and hugely entertaining, even with its whirlwind attack and indecipherable energy." British Theatre Guide
